Shortly after
we arrived at the university, we went into a room at the Phillip
Adler building, built in 2005. Starting off the presentation was
Vanessa Shelton, director of Iowa Press Association, and in
August director of Quill and Scroll. Vanessa then gave us a
scavenger hunt, which took us all over the building. Vanessa’s
student helper was Julie Koehn, whose majors are Journalism and
Psychology.
“I love it,”
Julie Koehn said.
The day then
continued with a presentation by Jason Brummond, Editor and
Chief of the Daily Iowan, and Erika Binegar, Metropolitan Editor
of the Daily Iowan. They both decide which articles go where.
They told us to start Journalism early.
“I was 19, a
sophomore in college, when I decided for sure,” Erika Binegar
said, 21.
“I took my
first Journalism class in 2002, and then I graduated in
2003,”Jason Brummond said, 22.
After they
did the presentation, Jason and Erika, took us on a tour of
where the journalists work.
After we ate
lunch, Vanessa Shelton gave another presentation. During lunch a
student had asked her why she was helping us, and what she wants
from us.
“We don’t
want anything from you, else than to expand your world,”
answered Vanessa Shelton.
Charity Cooper, and Guinevere Banks, both from the Center of
Diversity Enrichment gave a presentation to us to stay in school
and how to get into colleges. Their steps were: stay in school,
join summer camps, know course requirements, take the ACT,
increase your skills, and ask questions along the way. Their
presentation taught us a lot and it was a great end to the field
