The bus ride to Iowa City was long, but it was worth it. When we got there we were shown around campus and learned much about the Daily Iowan, the University of Iowa newspaper.
Our first stop was the Phillip D. Adler building. This building was started in 2003 and finished in 2005. When we went inside, we met Vanessa Shelton, director of summer journalism camps and the Iowa High School Press
Association. Her assistant was Julie Koehn. Julie was editor of her high school yearbook and high school newspaper. She is now a freshman at the university and works at the Daily Iowan and updates the website.
"The more questions you ask as a reporter, the better your story is," said Koehn.
Then we got to talk to Erika Benigan and Jason Brummond. Jason is the editor and chief of the Daily Iowan. He oversees everything, and makes sure it runs smoothly. He got a scholarship to the university, but he didn't really have a plan until he started working at the Daily Iowan. Erika is the Metro Editor. The Metro Editor assigns articles, and is responsible for editing stories. She sometimes reconstructs stories as well. Erika was a Central graduate. She won her first National award for copy editing in 2003. Erika didn't really get involved in newspaper until her sister did, but she realized it was what she wanted to do when she was a senior.
Then we ate lunch in the cafeteria. It was an all you can eat buffet, filled with many different varieties of food. There was Italian, Asian, grilled, fried, and fresh food. There was a salad bar and a dessert counter. It was so delicious! Then Charity Cooper and Guinevere Banks talked to us about the steps to getting in to a good college. These steps were like taking the ACT's and taking four years of a foreign language.
Iowa City was, as always, a learning experience. I was motivated to go to college and perhaps pursue a career in journalism. I got to talk to a lot of interesting people, who had some great advice! I would love to go
