Changes bring
excitement
Our Editorial
As the school year begins, many changes and new faces fill the
halls. Although Principal Tim Wernentin is returning for his fourth consecutive
year, he is surrounded here by a new group of administrators. In addition, nine
new teachers are joining the Blue Devil family.
The student council will be led in a new direction. Lynnell Edwards, twelve year
advisor, passed the torch to our librarian, Karen Hosmer. They look to continue
the great success Edwards brought to the council and are excited for the new
ideas Hosmer brings to the table. With this change in advisor and the wellness
policy put into stricter effect, the council will no longer be able to sell
drinks each morning before and after second block.
The sports program looks to be up from last year in nearly every sport. Gone are
the days of being the bottom of the conference sport after sport. The Blue
Devils have regained the respect of the other competitors and figure to be top
of the MAC in many sports.
The athletic year is off to a great start under new athletic director Chris
Cartee. The boys golf team won the Muscatine Invite setting a school record with
a score of 292. Earlier this month, the team also won the first round of the MAC
conference meet. Both football and volleyball teams look to improve on last
years season and make a run at a conference title. However, the boy’s basketball
team may be the team with the most potential with the return of three starters
from last season’s conference champions, along with the healthy return of star
center LA Pomlee. The team looks to make a very serious run at both conference
and state championships. Hopefully the “Marshall Maniacs” will be very
supportive by cheering on the red and blue in all sporting events throughout the
year.
Former Activities Director, Rob Scott, has been promoted to assistant principal
Sarah Gott, the new activities director and former Blue Devil graduate, was
involved in student council, music and sports in addition to being homecoming
queen. Her track record shows her ability to organize well and she will benefit
all.
The band will be led this year by new directors, Corey Hanson and Tim Hatcher,
who look to continue the success we have had over the years. The show choir also
looks to build on the high-quality year they had last year, with new members
filling the shoes of the graduating seniors.
With all the changes and new faces this year, it promises to be filled with
excitement as students and staff gear up to make the 103 year the best we have
ever had!
