Band competes at B.O.A.

Teresa Foster
The marching band competed in the annual Bands of America Grand Nationals competition in Indianapolis, Indiana Nov. 10. It was held at the RCA Dome, home of the Indianapolis Colts. The band performed their show titled “Spirit, Remembrance, and Honor.” This is the sixth year they have competed.

Ninety-two bands from across the country competed to be the best high school marching band in America. They performed their shows on Thursday and Friday. Then 35 bands were chosen to perform again on Saturday in the semi-finals. The top 12 bands competed on Sunday to determine the winner.

Music influences other areas of student lives, stimulates success

Teresa Foster
Do you think Beethoven and Bach are bothersome and boring? Think again. They could help you get into college, improve mental health and build skills needed in all areas of life.

High school students involved in music have been shown to have higher grade point averages than students not involved. Numerous studies have proven that music education, in addition to a regular high school curriculum, helps improve math and science ability by developing reasoning skills. It also increases the ability to learn and remember. A study of SAT test-takers showed that those who were involved in music performance scored higher on the verbal and math tests than non-musicians.

Choirs prepare for the holiday season

Jessi Vandenberg
The holiday season is just around the corner as the choirs prepare for the annual Messiah Concert held at Lyceum Hall.

All Davenport high school choirs will come together to perform for the area, Dec. 5. The choirs have been daily preparing for this event, rehearsing the music.

“I always like performing the Messiah each year. It’s a fun way to begin the holidays,” junior Kelsey Hoeksema said.
