Rally of support has support of students
Sarah Elgation
A group of approximately 50 protesters rallied Jan. 11 in support of peace and against war, most especially a war they view to be unjust and unnecessary. Among them were sophomores Lilly Lassen, and Abbey Siefker.
“I think the troops should leave,” Lassen said, “We really shouldn’t be sending anymore people over.”
Community organizer Carol Vernon’s goal through the protest was to disseminate information that the general public may not be aware of said that funding for many other fundamental parts of U.S. society will be lost on the war. She and her supporters had a lot to say about President Bush’s speech on the war in Iraq and the war on terror.
Backpacks eliminated as school policy changes
Tim Corlett
Backpacks and bags larger then 12 inches by 10 inches were outlawed in school during school hours, January 17, the beginning of C term.
The backpacks were eliminated to allow for less congested hallways and as a proactive approach to school violence. Prinicipal Tim Wernentin researched for two weeks, speaking with principals around the area and visiting school websites.
“Before the rule was enforced, Central and North High School were the only two schools in the area to allow backpacks and now its only North High School with backpacks,” Wernentin said.
