The Davis Doppler: Summer 2006

Jason Davis
Unlike last year, summer 2006 made weather headlines not for hurricanes but for heat waves.

As of Aug. 20, only three named storms had formed in the Atlantic, and none of them had become hurricanes. Alberto, Beryl, and Chris became tropical storms and affected the northern Florida, Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, and the Caribbean islands, all doing relatively little damage. The National Weather Service has lowered its outlook for storms the rest of the year; however, it still expects an above- normal number of tropical storms. On an interesting note, the Pacific has had an active typhoon season with many storms hitting China and Japan, causing lots of damage and loss of life.

Teens should be grateful about what they have and not complain about what they don't have

Jasmine Parker
I’m tired of kids around here thinking that their lives are so horrible when they are not. I know that we don’t all get the things that we want but we as a generation are too spoiled.

While some of us know what it is to work hard for the things that we buy, others seem to have everything handed to them. They think that they have the most terrible life in the world if they are told “no.” They forget the fact that there are teens that don’t have even the essentials in life like a place to stay. These teens have the audacity to walk around with Razor phones wearing expensive clothes; they have food on the table and the refrigerator at home. Instead of showing their appreciation they complain.

Vote on upcoming school board elections

Steve Ford
There is another opportunity for Americans to practice their most valuable right, their right that many died before them to give and protect: their right to vote September 12. In this upcoming election, three Davenport Community School District spots are open. Who knows more than students how the school should be run? This is an excellent opportunity for the younger voting generation to get out and vote. Unfortunately, a small percentage of young voters will most likely vote.
